The ‘Toshie Mackintosh’ Collection is designed by a group of Glasgow School of Art graduates – we are now practising designers in Scotland. During our studies at The GSA we lived with the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his interior design. The tile motifs decorating the corridors and stairwells which led to the studios were imprinted on our minds as we hurried to our classes on different levels of the School.
Over the years there was a real frustration among us that no one had produced a stylish and elegant interpretation of CRM’s work, that could be evolved into a contemporary design. In most countries you can buy classic pieces based on distinguished designs from that country’s artists, architects and designers – we thought it was time to do the same for Mackintosh and Scotland.
We set out to produce a few signature pieces to establish our core brand in the belief that the discerning purchaser would appreciate being able to, at last, buy something evocative of his work. We hoped that our approach would bring a new dimension to Mackintosh in both design and manufactured product. After much heart searching, trial and error, we created our Collection where we echo ‘the colour range’ used in his interiors and furniture and of course, the tile motifs that left such an impression with us.
Celebrating his work, we introduce the ‘Toshie Mackintosh’ Collection of Fabrics and Wallpapers. Our designs are centred around the ‘Toshie’ ‘Nine Square’ brand and are evocative of the ‘Master’s’ geometric tile motifs which, among other influences, drew upon the simplicity of Japanese art and are to be found in many of his designs.
Adding another facet to the collection, we also created a ‘Mackintosh Tartan’ handwoven exclusively for us in Harris Tweed from the Outer Hebrides.
